Centro Sávila emerged out of a recognition of the racial health disparities that Hispanic, immigrant and non-native English-speakers have historically experienced in New Mexico. This population, the largest ethnic/racial group in the state, faces many linguistic, cultural, economic and geographic barriers to accessing healthcare and essential social services.

2011

Dr. Bill Wagner began seeing Spanish-speaking patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Dr. Bill Wagner, a Clinical Social Worker and Cultural Anthropologist, converted a small home into office space on Isleta Blvd. in Albuquerque’s South Valley and began seeing Spanish-speaking patients regardless of their ability to pay.

2012

The Savila Collaborative was founded.

The Savila Collaborative (Centro Sávila’s umbrella non-profit 501c3 organization) was founded.

2013
Centro Savila became a member of the South Valley Healthy Communities Collaborative.

Centro Savila became a member of the South Valley Healthy Communities Collaborative.

Centro Savila became a member of the South Valley Healthy Communities Collaborative-later EleValle.  EleValle was a collective of organizations working with community to improve the health and wellbeing of South Valley residents.

This work was accomplished by:

  • Connecting community members to health and social services, and help County residents navigate these systems through the Pathways to A Healthy Bernalillo County program.
  • Enrolling community members in health coverage options; Facilitating community collaboration, planning and development.
  • Advocating for systems, policies and funding to improve community health.
  • Providing health and family services through referral to partner organizations.
